Updated 2026-09-15•Where to Stop

Melbourne to Sydney is a pretty long drive. On a good day, and without stops, driving from Melbourne to Sydney takes about nine hours. Of course, it all depends on where exactly in Melbourne you're leaving from, and where in Sydney you're going to. It's possible to drive from Melbourne to Sydney in a day, but, especially if you're travelling with children or a baby, it can often be a good idea to stop halfway.

If you've read our guide on planning a road trip with a baby, you'll know it's important plan plenty of stops. These stops need to be good places to change the baby, take a bit of a break, grab a snack, and maybe more. It's possible to plan a Melbourne to Sydney drive yourself, but it's also a good idea to get some more specific advice.

For this guide, we're assuming you'll be taking the fastest and most common inland route from Melbourne to Sydney along the Hume highway. It's a good route. Sure, it can be a little boring but it's direct and easy.

Don't Do the Drive in One Day

Although it's possible to drive from Melbourne to Sydney in one day, if you're doing the drive with a baby, it's not a good idea. We would suggest stopping for the night around Albury/Wodonga. There are plenty of place to stay around Albury and Wodonga that suit a variety of budgets and needs, and it's about halfway between Melbourne and Sydney.

Driving from Melbourne to Albury takes about three and half to four hours, which is a pretty full day of driving with a baby, especially if you're making a few stops along the way, and it's important to make plenty of stops when you're driving with a baby.

But between Melbourne and Albury/Wodonga, where should you stop to take breaks, change the baby, eat, and everything else. And then, on your second day of travel, where should you stop between Albury-Wodonga and Sydney. Let's take a look.

Three Good Stops Between Melbourne & Albury-Wodonga

Your first stop when driving to Melbourne and Sydney (or Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga if you're doing it in two days) should be Seymour. It's about an hour and 20 minutes out of Melbourne and, although that can be a big jump with a baby, it's possible because it's early on. Seymour is a relatively big town, and the Seymour Library has baby changing facilities; libraries in general are often good stops. Seymour also has plenty of cafes to stop at; take a look at baby changing facilities in Setymour.

If your baby is falls asleep or if you're comfortable continuing on, Euroa is about 40 minutes past Seymour. 40 minutes may be a little soon after Seymour, but Euroa is the nicest stop along the Hume. It also has plenty of cafes and a pub for a proper lunch break. It's also far enough from the next stop that you'll be spacing out your stops well enough.

After Euroa, the next stop is Wangaratta, which is about an hour away. Take a look a baby changing facilities in Wangaratta; being a bigger rural city, Wangaratta has a shopping centre than includes a proper parents room and more comfortable family friendly facilities, which is why we're encouraging the Wangaratta stop. This is a nice comfortable stop that will work well as the baby starts to get fussy after being in the car for awhile.

About an hour past Wangaratta is Albury-Wodonga, which we think you should be stopping at for the night. By this point you and the famill will have been in the car for almost four hours, not counting any stops. That's a long day for a baby. We'll leave it up to you to decide where you'll stay, but if you're passing through, consult our baby change map on where to stop.

That's your first day of travelling from Melbourne to Sydney with a baby. To be clear, here are your stops:

  • Seymour
  • Euroa
  • Wangaratta
  • Albury-Wodonga

Stops Between Albury-Wodonga & Sydney

Whether you've stopped for the night in the Albury-Wodonga area or you've continued through to try and do the drive in a day, once you cross into New South Wales from Victoria, there's not much between Albury and Gundagai, which you won't hit for nearly two hours. Gundagai's main stop is the Dog on the Tuckerbox, which is right off the freeway; it's a good spot to stretch your legs, feed the baby, and have a snack. If you can't quite make it to Gundagai (two hours can be a long time), Holbrook is likely your only other option, which is only about 40 minutes after Albury (and therefore more than an hour from Gundagai). This leg of the journey is probably the most challenging, so make sure your baby is up for it before hitting the road.

After Gundagai is another big hop to Goulburn. Again, there's not a lot in between, but Yass is also an option about half way between the two. We think Goulbourn is the better and more comfortable stop, but if your baby is getting fussy, there are fast food restaurants in Yass that will allow you to take a break and have good enough facilities for baby changing. If you can make it to Goulbourne though, go for it!

After Goulbourn, we're not saying you should wing it, but you'll notice that there are more towns and more opportunities to stop as needed. By this point, you're either at the end of a very long car journey or on the second day of driving, and your baby may need to stop sooner than expected. Staying on the Hume Highway, there are plenty of towns to stop in and, if you're concerned about whether there's a clean and easy place to change your baby, take a look at our map.

In summary, here's where to stop between Albury-Wodonga and Sydney

  • Gundagai
  • Yass (if needed)
  • Goulbourn
  • Go for it!
